Common Credit Report Errors to Look For

The reporting issues consumers most often discover during a careful review.

Identity and file-mixing issues

Files can be mixed when two consumers share a similar name or identifying details. The result may be accounts, addresses, or inquiries that belong to someone else appearing on your report.

Duplicate or re-aged accounts

The same debt can appear more than once, for example when an account is sold or transferred. Dates matter too: the date of first delinquency drives how long certain information may remain reportable.

Status and balance details

Accounts closed by the consumer but reported otherwise, payments reported late that were made on time, or balances that do not match statements are all details worth verifying with documentation.

Documenting what you find

For each item, note what the report says, what you believe is correct, and which documents support that position. Specific, documented disputes are clearer for everyone involved.
